Kindergarten eligibility requirements reminder

2/23/2024

As parents and families prepare to send children to school for the first time, keep in mind these important reminders regarding kindergarten eligibility.

A child must be at least 5 years old by the district’s age cutoff date of either Aug. 1 or Sept. 30 to enter kindergarten. Age is the only requirement to enroll in kindergarten. Public schools may not deny a resident, age-eligible child entrance to kindergarten for any reason.

Some young children might not be fully toilet trained upon entering kindergarten or may experience accidents during the school day. Public and community schools may not deny enrollment or unenroll a kindergarten student for toileting accidents, wearing disposable training pants to school, or for requiring assistance with toileting.
