Funding available for schools and local governments to create safe routes to school

2/6/2023

ODOT’s Safe Routes to School program provides resources, technical assistance and project funding to encourage and enable students in grades kindergarten through 12 to walk or ride their bikes to school. The Safe Routes to School program is an opportunity to advance school safety through transportation plans while promoting student health and wellness with active forms of transportation.

Safe Routes to School empowers school districts and local governments to provide more opportunities to walk and bike to school. Transportation routes are planned and implemented in collaboration with school district representatives, local government officials and a local Safe Routes to School grant coordinator. Districts and local planners can apply for project funding by March 3.

Districts and local government officials can prepare for future Safe Routes to School applications by participating in ODOT’s Active Transportation Academy. Participants receive hands-on practice and guidance creating school transportation safety plans and other related tasks that can be used in Safe Routes to School applications and implementation plans.

More information is on the Safe Routes to School webpage, including the application for funding. Email questions to Cait Harley.
