Summer programs available for Appalachian students and teachers

1/30/2023

Students and teachers in Appalachia can apply for free summer programs: Appalachian STEM Academy at Oak Ridge and the Appalachian Entrepreneurial Academy. Middle and high school students and high school teachers who attend a public school in the 32-county Appalachia region are encouraged to apply by the Feb.10 deadline.

The Appalachian STEM Academy at Oak Ridge is a residential, hands-on learning experience connecting high school and middle school students, and high school teachers with award-winning scientists at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. Students will gain exposure to applied science and STEM while teachers will work to develop STEM-related curriculum. The program will take place July 8-21 for high school students and teachers, and July 8-14 or July 15-21 for middle school students.

The Appalachian Entrepreneurial Academy is designated for high school students to develop skills and promote creativity essential to entrepreneurial success. Through mentorships, teambuilding and other curriculum components, students can discover innovative career paths and enhance their way of thinking. The Academy will take place July 8-21.

Applications are available on the program webpages and due no later than Feb. 10. Send question to the Governor’s Office of Appalachia at appalachia@development.ohio.gov or the Appalachian Regional Commission at academies@arc.gov.
