Recognizing Ohio’s Turnip the Beet awardees

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Turnip the Beet Award showcases schools and community organizations that go above and beyond summer food service program requirements. Awards are granted for bronze, silver, or gold level. Based on program year 2023 activities, 11 Ohio summer meal sponsors received this award.

Congratulations to the following:

  • Cincinnati Public Schools, gold award recipient;
  • Cleveland Metropolitan School District, gold award recipient;
  • Lodi Family Center, gold award recipient;
  • Northwestern Ohio Community Action Commission, gold award recipient;
  • Painesville City Local Schools, gold award recipient;
  • Greater Cleveland Food Bank, silver award recipient;
  • Plain Local Schools, silver award recipient;
  • Meigs Local School District, bronze award recipient;
  • Parma City School District, bronze award recipient;
  • River Valley Local Schools, bronze award recipient; and
  • Washington Court House Schools, bronze award recipient.

Honored awardees serve age-appropriate foods; use menus featuring a variety of quality vegetables, fruits, and whole grains and locally sourced foods; and engage in food- and nutrition-related activities. 

In addition to hunger relief, Summer Food Programs positively impact children’s development by providing an opportunity for the community, schools, and engaged partners to come together to offer nutritious mealslocal foodseducational activities, and encourage healthy lifestyles.
