Fine Arts
The Ohio Department of Education and Workforce encourages visual and performing arts educators to use the standards to develop the creative imagination, skills and dispositions that students need in order to be challenged to discover and learn, prepared to pursue a fulfilling post-high school path and empowered to become a resilient lifelong learner who contributes to society. Fine arts (e.g., dance, media, music, theatre, visual) education is defined as a “Core subject area” according to ORC 3319.074 (A) and is a required part of the prescribed curriculum ORC 3313.60 (A)(7).
Education in the Arts is essential to support the Department vision of Future Forward Ohio. Our Content Standards and Model Curriculum address each of the following coordinated strategies to facilitate success:
- OVERCOMING OBSTACLES TO LEARNING: Instruction in the arts engages students and has been demonstrated to be effective in combatting chronic absenteeism and promoting positive student wellness.
- ACCELERATING LEARNING: Instruction in the arts enhances the learning of literacy and numeracy, technology, and 21st century skills.
- PREPARING STUDENTS FOR FUTURE SUCCESS: Instruction in the arts fosters design thinking, creativity, and problem solving. Fluency in the Artistic Process supports student cultivation of 21st century skills and dispositions to support their personal and professional goals.
