Universal special education forms project survey

The Office for Exceptional Children currently is exploring the feasibility of creating a universal system for electronic special education forms in Ohio. The system would be designed so that appropriate staff members in districts would have immediate access to special education records for students transferring into their districts, while also minimizing the burden of sharing documents when students transfer out.

Background check updates required for educators who have permanent and non-tax certificates

Educators who hold permanent certificates and permanent non-tax certificates are required by state law to update their FBI criminal background checks every five years through the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation (BCI). In addition, an updated BCI background check is required if the certificate holder has lived outside Ohio within the past five years. Permanent certificate holders whose background checks will expire by June 30 will need to update these if they have not already done so.

Nominate a candidate for 2017 Ohio Teacher of the Year by April 29

The nomination period for the 2017 Ohio Teacher of the Year program is now open. More teachers will gain recognition than ever before at the school district and regional levels. State Board of Education members, together with leaders in their territories, are actively promoting the competition by contacting district superintendents and requesting nominations of outstanding educators.

Reminder: College Credit Plus deadline extended to April 22 for setting up SAFE accounts

Families of nonpublic and home school students who have submitted an intent to participate in College Credit Plus for the 2016-2017 school year now have until Friday, April 22, to establish a SAFE account and apply for College Credit Plus funding. This is an extension of the previous April 8 deadline.

Department releases new issue of Test Talk for Parents

The Ohio Department of Education has just posted the latest issue of Test Talk for Parents, which contains an update on how Ohio’s spring state test administration is going. The article contains figures on how many students have tested so far and how many tests have been taken (more than 1.3 million).
