The 2024 Midwest Black Male Educator Summit, hosted by Cincinnati Public Schools, will take place Saturday, Feb. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., in Cincinnati. The summit celebrates and highlights the accomplishments of Black male educators, while discussing how to support, retain, and recruit Black males in education. Summit attendees will have the chance to hear from leading educators and speakers on the importance of Black male educators in classrooms and their impact on raising student achievement while serving the whole child. The event is free to Cincinnati Public Schools employees and college students. General admission tickets are $20.

Recently, the Ohio Department of Health Director Bruce Vanderhoff, M.D., MBA, announced that the Public Health Fund of Ohio has awarded a total of $350,000 to seven suicide prevention coalitions across Ohio. The coalitions in Cuyahoga, Darke, Hamilton, Highland/Pike, Licking, Logan, and Lucas counties each received $50,000. They will use the funding for suicide prevention strategies and approaches aimed at helping youth and young adults ages 10 to 24 years.

The Department regularly posts rules for public comment. Recently, draft rules related to assessments, open enrollment, vocational education, gifted identification, the state credit enhancement program, the Education Management Information System, and rules regarding exemptions from state statutory provisions opened for comment.
Additionally, current rules related to the state’s seal of biliteracy and delivery of services are posted for comment.
The director of the Department of Education and Workforce intends to engage in rulemaking to adopt a new rule. As required by Ohio law, the director intends to adopt a rule regarding the identification, instruction, assessment, and reclassification of English learners.

National Child and Adult Care Food Program Week is March 10-16. The Department of Education and Workforce encourages childcare centers, family day care homes, after-school programs, and adult day care centers that participate in the food program to join the celebration. Local program sites are invited to share their activities with the Department.
