Alternate assessment public comments: 1 percent waiver extension request for reading, mathematics and science

The Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) requires states to ensure the total number of students assessed in each subject using the Alternate Assessment for Students with Significant Cognitive Disabilities (AASCD) does not exceed 1 percent of the total number of all students in the state who took Ohio’s State Tests. States that anticipate they will exceed 1 percent in alternate assessment participation must submit a waiver request to the U.S. Department of Education.

U.S. Department of Education grant to assist in creating new Statewide Family Engagement Center

The Center on Education and Training for Employment at The Ohio State University, in partnership with the Ohio Department of Education, received a $4.2 million grant from the U.S. Department of Education to develop a statewide center to serve Ohio’s families and schools. The Statewide Family Engagement Center will empower families to support their children’s education and provide comprehensive training and technical assistance to schools and organizations that support family-school partnerships.

Computer science workshops for administrators and school counselors coming this fall

Computer science opens more doors for students than any other discipline in today’s world. Learning even the basics will help students in virtually any career. Battelle is partnering with Code.org, a nonprofit computer science curriculum provider, to offer two trainings this fall specifically designed for school and district administrators and school guidance counselors.
