Regional meeting registration now open for physical education teachers

The Ohio Department of Education is conducting regional meetings for physical education teachers. During these sessions, Ryan Eldridge, the department’s physical education consultant, will share website updates and how educators can provide feedback on topics such as the Wellness and Physical Education measures on the Ohio School Report Cards, physical education grade band evaluations and assessments, and more. In addition, the department is seeking feedback from physical education professionals about the successes and challenges they face.

National School Lunch Program Equipment grant is available

The 2014 Agriculture Appropriations Act authorizes the Ohio Department of Education’s Office for Child Nutrition to competitively award equipment assistance grants to eligible school food authorities participating in the National School Lunch Program. The department received $1,122,622 for distribution to school food authorities.

These funds will allow the purchase of capital equipment helpful in serving healthier meals, meeting the new nutritional standards with emphasis on more fresh fruits and vegetables in school meals, improving food safety, and expanding accessibility to food services.

HealthierUS School Challenge application webinar is Nov. 12

The HealthierUS School Challenge is a voluntary program that provides financial awards to schools that encourage their students to make healthy school food choices and be more physically active. All schools that participate in the National School Lunch Program and the School Breakfast Program are eligible to participate in the challenge. Schools that earn a HealthierUS School Challenge designation receive a financial award, ranging from $500 to $2,000, based on the level of achievement.

Ohio Career Exploration Internship Program now available

The Ohio Career Exploration Internship Program is designed to help Ohio high school students explore potential careers and gain valuable work experience in a professional environment. Through an internship of at least 20 weeks and 200 hours of training, students have the opportunity to explore all aspects of a profession and gain better understanding of the training needed to enter a career field. The program is not focused on one task, but provides students with a wide range of experiences within a career field.

INFOhio ACT/AP/SAT Calendar Helps Students Prepare for Exams

LearningExpress Library, which all Ohio K-12 schools can use for free through INFOhio, contains tutorials, eBooks and full practice exams for the ACT, SAT and eight AP exams.

To help students manage their preparation schedules, go to the INFOhio ACT/SAT/AP Test Prep Calendar available online. Working backwards from the exam dates throughout the year, the calendar prompts students when they should begin preparing and contains direct links to the tutorials, eBooks and practice exams to help them.
