Free currency reader available for blind or visually impaired individuals

The Department of Treasury’s Bureau of Engraving and Printing is now accepting and processing applications nationwide from blind or visually impaired individuals who wish to receive free currency readers. The free money reader, called iBill® Currency Identifier, provides a convenient means for blind or visually impaired individuals to identify all United States currency notes in circulation.

Unique opportunity for Appalachian students and teachers

Ohio Appalachian middle and high school students interested in math, science and technology are encouraged to submit an application for the Appalachian Regional Commission’s 2015 Oak Ridge National Laboratory Summer Math-Science-Technology Institute. The free summer institute will take place from July 11-24 for high school students and July 19-24 for middle school students. Both sessions will be held at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education in Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

As your districts begin administering Ohio’s New State Tests this week, I’m reminded of all that you and your district and building staffs have done to prepare your students for a successful experience.

Implementing Ohio’s Learning Standards and, now, corresponding state tests have required a great deal of work. Change is hard. The Ohio Department of Education has provided support, but I’m fully aware that it is you, in the districts, who ultimately bring the ball across the goal line.

Clarification on accessibility and accommodations for new state tests

Here is information about the current state of assessment and support for Ohio’s students.

This year’s value-added roster verification to involve more teachers and principals

This week, superintendents at traditional districts and community schools will be receiving a message from Superintendent Ross requesting that they confirm their participation in value-added roster verification by March 6. Participating in roster verification is the best way for districts and schools to ensure that value-added measures for next school year’s educator evaluations accurately reflect the influence of each teacher’s instruction on student progress.

Online forms are now available to nominate your state school nurse consultant for the Outstanding State School Nurse Consultant Achievement Award. The National Association of State School Nurse Consultants, Inc., has established this award to publically recognize the contributions of state school nurse consultants by honoring one consultant annually who has demonstrated excellence in the role.
