Community school sponsor application cycle now open

The Department has opened the 2018-2019 community school sponsor application cycle. Organizations interested in becoming community school sponsors in Ohio must complete applications by Dec. 31, 2018. Find the application and all required documentation on the Department’s website.

Teens and tweens may encounter social media ads promoting products that are unhealthy, unsafe and inappropriate. Parents can use these ads as teachable moments to help kids use critical thinking skills and develop “media literacy.”

Guidance on integrating coursework and awarding simultaneous credit now available

Districts, traditional schools, community schools and chartered nonpublic schools are allowed by state law to integrate learning standards from multiple subject areas into a single course that yields simultaneous credits. Integrated coursework benefits students by creating authentic learning experiences, deepening student understanding of subject areas and potentially creating space in students’ schedules for more learning.

Spread the word: Kids eat free this summer!

Districts can help make sure parents know about the Summer Food Service Program. The Ohio Department of Education is sponsoring the program again this summer, providing children through age 18 with free, healthy meals when they lack access to school breakfasts and lunches. Children through age 21 who have disabilities and approved individualized education programs can also participate.
