From the Superintendent

As you continue to finalize plans for this new school year, I want to make you aware of a few field tests that will take place this spring. This is nothing new for our students; Ohio’s assessment system has always included field-test questions.

The first of these field tests will be conducted by PARCC. In spring 2014, PARCC plans to field-test new English language arts and math assessments in selected schools in 20 states, including Ohio. Only a few classrooms in participating schools will take the tests, and most students will take only a limited portion of a content-area test. Although our plan is for all tests to be computer-based, some schools will field-test computer-based assessments and some will test paper-and-pencil assessments.

If any of your schools has been selected, you will receive notification soon from PARCC’s test vendor, Pearson. Please respond quickly so we can find a replacement school if one of your schools must decline.

From the Superintendent

This week the Ohio Department of Education will release new district and school report cards that, for the first time, assign A-F letter grades on nine measures.

These new report cards will make the educational performance of your schools and districts more transparent than ever. Your district and school report cards will also position you to have a productive dialogue with your community about strengths and opportunities that can drive your school system’s improvement.

Many school leaders around the state already are working with parents and school teams to look closely at the new system and the data it generates. As we measure more areas of school performance over the next two years, you should get additional clarity on what must be done to ensure that all of Ohio’s boys and girls get the quality education they deserve. As you work with your communities, I urge you to take advantage of our new Principal’s Toolkit to help you explain the new system. The report card web page also will have a Resources section with documents and supporting information.
