End-of-year practice tests for Grades 3-8 math, Algebra I, Algebra II and Geometry are now available at http://practice.parcc.testnav.com. These are important resources to help students, teachers and test administrators become familiar with the item types and the technology.

Application deadline extended for private school scholarships

The deadline to apply for EdChoice scholarships that help students from underperforming public schools or those with demonstrated financial need attend participating private schools, has been extended until May 9, 2014.

Nominate a district Ohio Teacher of the Year candidate by April 30; more recognition opportunities available

More teachers will gain recognition than ever before at the school district and regional levels through the 2015 Ohio Teacher of the Year program.  The program has been restructured to include new State Board Territory Teacher of the Year awards for the 11 State Board of Education territories. State Board of Education members, together with leaders in their territories, are contacting district superintendents to promote the competition.

Training scheduled for school Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning

A two-day training course for school Multi-Hazard Emergency Planning will be held June 12-13 at the Franklin County Emergency Management and Homeland Security in Columbus. The course is designed to provide schools with the knowledge, skills and tools needed to refine or develop an all-hazards school Emergency Operations Plan and to identify how to train and exercise the school plan.

The Digital Advanced Placement Tuition Waiver program still has limited funds available for Ohio high school students who want to enroll in an online Advanced Placement course at little to no cost to the student or school through ilearnOhio. Applications will be accepted until program funds are exhausted.

Guidance available for schools seeking Accessible Instructional Materials for students with print disabilities

For some students, printed instructional materials can be a barrier to participation and achievement in the general education curriculum. Accessible Instructional Materials remove that barrier. Under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, state and local education agencies must ensure that children with disabilities who need Accessible Instructional Materials in the four specialized formats receive those materials in a timely manner.

From the Superintendent

The next Straight A Fund grant application period is April 4-18, with $150 million up for distribution. Now that districts have the experience of the first round of applications under their belts, I look forward to seeing even more innovative proposals in the next round to improve student learning.

There are some changes to the Straight A Fund application and review process as a result of House Bill 342. These changes will affect the second round application and grant-awarding process, as well as the timeline.
