New opportunities from the Ohio STEM Learning Network

2/13/2023

Teachers and other professionals looking to bring new life to the STEM classroom can take advantage of the Ohio STEM Learning Network’s (OSLN) learning opportunities this spring.

OSLN offers professional development to all Ohio teachers looking to bring the critical ideas of computer science and computational thinking to their students. Each program targets a different age group:

  • OSLN Computer Science K-5 Program (Grades K-5);
  • Code.org Computer Science Discoveries (Grades 6-10);
  • Code.org Computer Science Principles (Grades 9-12);
  • Code.org Computer Science A (Grades 9-12).

Priority registration closes May 1.

With Computer Science A, Ohio teachers can challenge students and offer AP credit to advanced learners. Steve Phelps completed the Computer Science A program and now teaches AP Computer Science at Mariemont High School in Cincinnati. On Feb. 23, duringOffer AP Credit with Computer Science A,” Phelps will share what the program was like as a teacher and how students react. Register here.

Every student should have the opportunity to learn computer science. Reaching this goal requires commitment and professional supports for school leaders and counselors, as well as teachers.

School leaders and counselors can join OSLN March 8 from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. in Columbus for the “Computer Science Workshop for School Leaders and Counselors.” During this workshop, educators will experience K-12 computer science and computational thinking lessons. They also will get up to speed on computer science policy changes, free resources for schools and details about OSLN’s computer science supports. Register here.

The Ohio Rural Educator Program trains teachers to connect existing science lessons to real-world agriculture needs so students will begin to make connections between classroom content and future careers in agriculture. OSLN and Education Projects & Partnerships are recruiting for the third and final cohort of the program. The program includes experiential learning at The Ohio State University’s Waterman Agricultural and Natural Resources Laboratory and the Farm Science Review in London, Ohio. Applications for the program close March 10. Learn more and apply here

The Integrated Teaching and Learning Program is designed for teams of teachers seeking strategies for effective and meaningful integration of their grade-level content. Program participants will explore, learn and apply the five-step Integrated Teaching and Learning Protocol, ultimately creating a yearlong integrated curriculum map. This protocol can be combined with any instructional approach, ranging from traditional teaching to problem-based learning. Priority applications close April 3. Learn more and apply here

The Fostering STEM Institute is recruiting for a second year. The institute helps instructional specialists and teacher leaders foster STEM culture and instructional practices in their schools. The institute is designed around essential tenets of effective instructional coaching, transformational professional learning and quality STEM education. The Fostering STEM Institute includes both workshops and a residency opportunity. Applications close June 2. Learn more and apply here.
