Recognizing Ohio’s Turnip the Beet awardees

2/27/2023

The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Turnip the Beet Award showcases national schools and community organizations that go above and beyond summer food service program requirements. Awards are granted for bronze, silver or gold level. Based on program year 2022 activities, three Ohio summer meal sponsors received this award. Congratulations to:

  • The Lodi Family Center, gold award recipient;
  • Cincinnati Public Schools, silver award recipient; and
  • The Greater Cleveland Food Banks, bronze award recipients.

Honored awardees serve age-appropriate foods, use menus featuring a variety of quality vegetables, fruits and whole grains and locally sourced foods, and engage in food- and nutrition-related activities.

In addition to hunger relief, Summer Food Programs positively impact children’s development by providing an opportunity for the community, schools and engaged partners to come together to offer nutritious meals, local foods, educational activities and encourage healthy lifestyles.
