School Bus Purchase Program

Fiscal Year 2023 School Bus Purchase Program

The Department allocated $50 million to public school districts in FY22 to purchase school buses.  Some districts opted not to accept the funding they were awarded, and the Department will re-allocate these remaining funds.  The Department will first allocate the funds to districts that did not qualify for the program in FY22.

Under the program, the Ohio Department of Education will issue awards for school districts to purchase one or more buses. Districts will receive at least $45,000 per bus. Each bus purchased will require the school district to remove one of the qualifying buses (on the approved list provided by the Department) from regular daily service. If more than one bus is purchased, an equivalent number of buses shall be removed from regular service. Additional details about the School Bus Purchase Program FY23 include:

Fiscal Year 2021 School Bus Purchase Program

The State Budget includes $20 million in new funding in Fiscal Year 2021 for the Department to assist school districts in purchasing school buses. The $20 million investment by the state is the first time since 2009 that the state directly supported the cost of school bus replacement.

Under the program, the Department of Education will issue awards for school districts to purchase one or more buses. Each bus purchased will require the school district to remove one of its older buses (eight model years or older) from regular daily service. If more than one bus is purchased, an equivalent number of buses should be removed from regular service.
