Physical Activity Pilot Program

With a recent change to Ohio Revised Code (ORC) 3313.6016, the Ohio Department of Education is seeking schools/districts that may already qualify and/or would like to participate in the Physical Activity Pilot. Furthermore participating schools that successfully meet the requirements will receive acknowledgment on their state report card under the Physical Education and Wellness section. Although the physical activity pilot was originally introduced back in Senate Bill 210 (SB210) to districts, the recent amendment allows for one or more schools in the district to now apply and receive acknowledgment on the state report card.

In order to qualify for acknowledgment one or more schools in the district must provide all students with 30 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity per day or 150 minutes per week and must submit the participation form, due August 30. Additionally, at the end of the school year school is expected to complete a brief summary form, due May 30. Submissions can be sent to LearningandInstructionalStrategies@education.ohio.gov.

  • Moderate activity : Activity at the pace of a brisk paced walk or faster
  • Rigorous activity:   Activity in which conversation is not possible while doing

This could be achieved in a variety of ways. Schools could do this through a daily physical education class. They also could provide multiple classroom physical activity breaks, monitored active breaks in which all students walk at brisk walking pace or more, zero hour physical activity during which there is activity for all before first period, and any other way that a school can provide opportunities for ALL students to get moderate to vigorous activity throughout the day. Please provide a plan of implementation below.

School/District Piloting Sign-Ups

The Physical Activity Pilot Program is looking for any schools that provide or are interested in providing daily physical activity for all students (student exemptions). More specifically, any district that has one or more schools providing at least 30 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity each school day or at least 150 minutes of moderate to rigorous physical activity each week, throughout the school year will receive acknowledgement on the state report card. Schools must also submit the end of the year summary below. Submission forms and questions can be sent to LearningandInstructionalStrategies@education.ohio.gov
