Blue Ribbon Schools

The National Blue-Ribbon Schools Program (NBRS) is a national recognition program, honoring elementary, middle, and high schools in the United States that are making significant progress in closing achievement gaps among student subgroups or whose students achieve high overall academic excellence. Through this program, the U.S. Department of Education (USDOE) recognizes and celebrates these schools, while providing a model that all students can reach high levels of achievement.

USDOE allows the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce to nominate 14 public schools each year. At least one-third of these 14 schools must have 40 percent or more of their students from disadvantaged backgrounds. There are two categories for nomination:

  1. Exemplary High Performing Schools
  2. Exemplary Achievement Gap Closing

In recent years, DEW has decided to nominate schools in the Exemplary High Performing category. More information about the eligibility criteria for each of these categories can be found on the USDOE’s National Blue Ribbon Website.

Once nominated by DEW, these public schools must apply to USDOE for this award.

USDOE invites the Council for American Private Education (CAPE) to nominate private schools that meet the high performing and exemplary improvement criteria for recognition. Private schools interested in being nominated apply directly to CAPE.
