Frequently Asked Questions About the Physical Education Evaluation
General Questions
General Questions
Are physical education benchmark evaluations required to be reported in the Educational Management Information System (EMIS)?
Yes. Physical education benchmark evaluations should be submitted to EMIS. Physical education data is a report-only item on the Ohio School Report Cards and does not factor into report card ratings. Submitting all available data is required. Districts should refer to the EMIS manual for more information on reporting requirements.

Who must be evaluated? And how often?
All students must be evaluated once per grade band. Grade bands consist of K-2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12.
The only exception occurs in the 9-12 grade band. If a district has adopted the physical education waiver and a student has applied, qualified, and completed the waiver, they are not to be evaluated.

How does the evaluation apply to students participating in adaptive programming?
Students with disabilities are expected to participate in the physical education evaluation. Assessments may be modified when appropriate.

Is there local flexibility to alter the evaluation instrument?
For reporting purposes to the state, all schools/districts must report data for the information contained in the evaluation instrument. The local authority can go above and beyond what is contained in the instrument for local reporting purposes. The local authority does not have the right to go below what is contained in the instrument for the report card indicator.

Pursuant to ORC 3301.079 (B) (3) and 3313.60, it is the responsibility of Ohio's local boards of education to vet and approve curriculum and educational materials for use in the public schools within their district. The use of any materials posted or linked to on the Ohio Department of Education and Workforce website, including materials within Ohio’s Learning Standards or Appendices or any state model curricula or other educational resource material, is entirely up to the discretion of each local board of education.
