Screeners, Diagnostics and Assessments Required for First Time Kindergarten Enrollment

Overview

This information is for anyone involved with kindergarten enrollment, assessment, instruction, teaching, or supporting or providing care for a child entering kindergarten for the very first time. It lists the required assessments, diagnostic evaluations and screeners administered to first-time kindergarten students. The local school district where a child is enrolled is responsible for providing screeners, assessments, and diagnostics.

For all First-Time Students

• Hearing, vision, speech and communications, health or medical and any developmental disorders
• Kindergarten Readiness Assessment (KRA)
  • translation and interpretation  permitted for children identified as English learners
• Language Usage Survey
• Mathematics Diagnostic
• Reading Diagnostic for Third Grade Reading Guarantee
• Universal Screening (Tier 1 Dyslexia Screening)

for Potential English Learners

• Ohio English Language Proficiency Screener (OELPS – BK): 
  • based on Language Usage Survey

for identified English Learners

• Ohio English Language Proficiency Assessment (OELPA)

Non-Kindergarten Age Students

Children who are not age-eligible for school may be referred for early entrance. Districts should follow local policies to evaluate students for placement. More information can be found on the following pages:
